Financial well-being is absolutely a component of a healthy sense of self love. Now in addition to addressing financial challenges within a traditional therapy encounter, there is more tailored help for individuals needing more intensive support.

Financial therapy is a burgeoning, interdisciplinary field of therapy that seeks to emphasize the importance of a good relationship money to our relational and personal wellness. While it is fairly new, the field is gaining more recognition by way of a growing number of graduate social work programs offering financial social work tracks as well as the efforts of the Financial Therapy Association. This organization seeks to expand the field of financial therapy by offering resources to the public and professionals and supporting professionals who self-identify as offering financial therapy services or want to obtain financial therapy certification.

Financial therapy professionals generally have a background in mental health practice, and they combine this experience with training in financial management or the psychology of money to offer specialized counseling related to the feelings we have, the behaviors we perform, and the decisions we make surrounding money.

Groups that might have a need to supplement their traditional therapy with financial therapy might include:

  • People struggling with retirement or retirement savings

  • Gen Z’ers with anxiety surrounding money and the workforce

  • Couples struggling to align their financial goals or manage their finances together

  • People who struggle to define and set financial boundaries

  • Entrepreneurs, independent contractors, and business owners
